Loved and lost

Once i wrote about a friend, a college mate whose wedding i was invited to about 14 years ago in the UK. The one where the priest gave a speech about 'falling in love is an emotion, staying in love is a decision'? One wedding where i cried (other than mine of course) because i had high hopes for it. She was a Msian, hailed from KepalaBatas. Spoke Malay with heavy 'utara' accent. They got married very young...she at 26 and he was only 23....fresh out of uni. Definitely too young for a MatSaleh. They went steady in their final years at Uni, he proposed to her right before their final exams. I once asked her, why don't you just live together for a while...see if things would actually work out. She didn't think that was quite the proper thing to do...her parents would go ballistic if they found out. For a year after they were married they were husband and wife only at weekends. He was down in London starting his career in merchant banking. And she was up north doing her housemanship. When we usually have or Friday night outings or gathering, she would give it a miss or excused her self early...his train from London would usually arrive around 9pm. Being a dutiful wife she'd make sure she'd be at home to cook some pasta for him. We always wondered if he was capable of getting the pasta sauce out of the bottle and heating it up in the pan himself. She said he didn't know how to...that was why she needed to be home before him (memang isteri mithali but the guy keluar ke pub tak bawak dia ok pulak). One year later, i went home and she moved down to London to be with him. Two years later i went back to London for a short visit, we met up. She was very much a lady of leisure. He was already making big bucks by then. They bought a flat in Chiswick, shopped at Waitrose and got their Easter eggs from Harrod's. She was very happy playing housewife (even though she graduated top of our class that year). But deep down she was still the same Kedahan girl, still had the utara accent when she spoke in malay. Which she very much wanted to practise with me around. They didn't have any kids then. We lost touch. I didn't try to get in touch with her when i went back to the UK for my masters. I guess i just didn't want to then. I heard she was contented with her life. And i was just plain miserable. She knew my ex. Three years ago, through fb, she looked me up using his fb account. She didn't have her own at that time. They have two lovely daughters, just slightly older than mine. She was working part time and living in south of England. She very rarely updates her fb status.

I was tidying up the message folder on my fb. I came across her first jejak kasih message. I clicked on her name to see if she had updated her status. It says 'divorced'  on her relationship profile. I was...a little upset. Their love story was romantic to say the least. It was east meets west kind of thing..furthermore, he's a catholic. How can they be divorced? It's the same kind of feeling i had when Diana and Charles separated. I sent her a message...on hindsight i probably shouldn't have, out of the blue...but i need to know why. He probably have found another  woman willing to heat up his pasta sauce.

  1. A good story that one does not normally care for in real life. I am a bit lost whether the marriage was done by a priest in a church.'He is a atholic' you said. And you suggrested ' just live together for a while' ?

    1. She isn't a Muslim. They were already housemates during uni, that was why i suggested that she should play house with him first before embarking on something more official. He was only 23...i did think he was rather cornered into making a hasty decision. If the ring was not on her finger by such and such time, she was going to go home for good after her housemanship. He was a catholic and she a buddhist but they were married in a church by a catholic priest. I just thought that catholics do not get divorced. They could have had the wedding under a tree or something and by a Minister but i guess they did hope for the best.
