The entry kali ni akan berbau2 sikit macam student....cadang nak go pro in cerita misteri nusantara but really la Esah, you came out tops..(but i don't envy you at all..!)
This morning or to be exact yesterday morning, i hot betul kat someone ni. I know when i decided to further my studies, i was prepared to be humble and face come what may. I have been in my line of work dah lebih satu dekad..i know msians can be a bit funny when it comes to 'ilmu', sebab tu some people said kalau nak buat postgrad studies (that requires you to do a lot of self study, field work etc.) lebih baik pi buat kat overseas. Somehow the mat sallehs are more genuine when it comes to sharing knowledge ni...i hope no one is offended with this statement..i have experienced both studying and working overseas as well as kat tanahair sendiri.
Anyway, in my opinion, kalau kita nak mintak tolong orang, memang kena humble and jilat je la apa yang diludah..i'm not the type to bulldoze my way through to get what i want and that's what sometimes tick my SV off..satu lagi dia tak faham why i would rather pay for something e.g. service when he said i could get it for free. I told him that i'd rather burn a hole in my pocket than asking for someone to help me when dia rasa cam terpaksa je.
What happened this morning...i asked this colleague to teach me a new method. He's the same level as me but in terms of seniority, i lebih sikit. I always listen to his problems at work..dia ni cam loner sikit...kalau nak buat sesuatu or implement anything, cam ada je halangannya. So i thought takdelah masalah nak mintak tolong dia ni. But after this morning i macam menyesal pun ada but since where i work dia sorang je expert dlm benda tu, nak tak nak kena telan jugak. Memang perasan bagus betul la mamat ni. Examplenya macam ni, i mintak tolong dia tapi i belum sediakan semua benda yg diperlukan. I mean he could tell me that he hasn't got the materials, can i please go get them for him. Tapi ni tak, he said to me, you mau i tolong you, you mau suruh i pergi cari semua benda?
I macam kena tempik uols...! Lepas tu, taknak dengar opinion i pulak tu. The thing is, he's also doing his phd, one year ahead of me. But the thing is, dlm bab2 statistics (sorry la i memboringkan uols but sesapa yg tau stats, can you comment whether you agree/disagree with me) i perasan yg i lebih terror because i had to do it myself (pesal SV i yg crack tu tak bagi i gajikan statistician utk research i but this guy ni dia hempukkan semua kat statistician dia buatkan). Anyway, the method we are testing is to do with estimating someone's age thru xray. I gave him a bunch of xrays to look at and do the scoring and since he's the expert, i'm comparing my scores against his. He said to me, CK, gimme the name and DOB of the subjects. I said, why do you need it? Him, ya la you suruh i tengok xrays tu kan?
CK, i have the details of each subject on the xray itself but kita kan nak estimate the age, jadi i kena la blockout the DOB, kalau tak kang kita bias la pulak bila nak bagi score. Him, hey, i cuma nak tolong senangkan kerja you sekarang supaya nanti you tak susah!
I really don't see the point why he'd need the subject's info..tapi suara dah lain, so i pun kena pacify dia. CK, i have the details if you want to, bila you dah score the xrays, i'll put it in, don't worry..(duh! Kerja bodoh!)
Pastu dia tanya i, you tau ke macamana nak test the reliability between my scores and yours? I said, yes, guna kappa. And then dengan bangganya dia cakap kat i, kalau our scores are different by more than minus or plus 1, maknanya you buat silap banyak.
Heh! i really had to correct him la..i pantang betul kalau org bagi information salah tapi dgn bangganya. I said, no, kappa ni ada formula. Your scores and my scores will be compared using a formula and it will give a value between 0 to 1. Anything from 0.7 and above is considered fairly good agreement therefore can be accepted.
Then he asked me, mana paper you baca ni? Errrr,...i had to take up stats class (ada exam some more!) masa i buat masters dulu..duh!
Then i innocently asked him about the technique yg dia pro tu la, and he said this to me, sudah baca paper ka belum??? Kalau belum pergi baca!
Ewah ewah! berlagak nak mampus and he wasn't even my SV.
I dok diam2 lepas jumpa dia tadi and i pikir. Mungkin sebab tu kot why it is so difficult for him career wise. Nak naik pangkat susah, nak itu susah, nak ini susah..Being his colleague and someone who speaks to him the most, he could have been nicer to me but noooooo..
What goes around does come around.
(sorry la, entry kali ni so technical)

CK, tulis lah lagi pasal theses you ni. suka bace, bagi inspirasi. =))

wahyooo....kat NHS ni laaaagi ramai puak-puak camtu..nak nak yg pikir SW like moir ni punya opinion mengarut..only nak tunggu yg ada title Prof/Dr jugak..baru nak agree...
ReplyDeletekat kambing gurun dulu, kenapa i jarang nak share ilmu kerja lebih cepat sbb adalah set2 minyak bijan ni bila kita ajar terus ni gi canang dialah yg punya idea tp kan tetap vitamin M
ReplyDeletedgn org cam ni dah lama i tak jumpa, tp kalau jumpa dulu i sure tarukkkkkkkkkkk balik.hahaha
CK, I've just experienced belittled by the matsalleh prof. My prof, when i informed her that she made a mistake in her class schedule, masa i nak terangkan the mistake, she cut me off halfway saying 'let me figure it out', and then another caucasian (my coursemate) explained her mistake, she didnt cut him off pulak... Adakah kerna I'm asian?
ReplyDeleteBtw, kalau i jadi u, selagi boleh tak payahlah mintak tolong kat orang yang suka nak menunjuk-nunjuk tu... menyakitkan hati kan?? :)
Dear CK, am doing phd myself in australia and i think whom ever said doing overseas is better than local has been misled. the SV is no help at all, how i wish i could get a statistician to answer some of the questions for me. people like ur 'fren' should be shot in the back and dump into a lombong.
